Ruth started her career with Brian Mooney in Queen Street in 1982, purchasing Brian's Waterside Practice in 1996. A short move to Clooney Terrace followed in 1999, which allowed more space for expansion and the introduction of the newest technology into the Test Rooms. Additional investment has followed year on year, driven by what Ruth feels to be delivering the best possible patient experience and putting genuine eyecare at the heart of all we do.

Ruth's unashamed interest in eyes and attention to detail has taken the practice into areas not commonly accessible at a normal high street practice. Special interests include Contact lens fitting, Dry Eye Management, Medical Retina, and Diabetic Eyecare. Ruth is an accredited Diabetic Retinal Screener for the Western Health and Social Services Board.

Gavin has special interests in dispensing of complex lenses, contact lenses and children's visual development. The latter has progressed into the study of reading and learning difficulties associated with visual or oculo-motor problems, and the use of coloured overlays, colorimetry and specific tints to help relieve visual stress and migraine symptoms.
Services
Ruth Bigger Opticians have been providing an exceptionally high standard of eye care in the Waterside area of the city for over 30 years.
Originally located just opposite Ebrington Barracks on Limavady Road in 1985, as a Waterside addition to Brian Mooney's Queen St practice in the city.
Moving to Clooney Terrace in 1999 for more ground floor space, and adding Gavin Fullerton in 2006 and other equipment upgrades along the way!
We were the first optician in the Waterside area of the city, attracting people from Claudy/Dungiven, and out to Strabane and Eglinton/Limavady.
We rely on our sight in all aspects of daily life and therefore an eye examination is essential to monitor eye health and maintain the best vision possible.
We strive to provide the most thorough eye examinations using the latest technology and equipment so you, the patient, have full confidence in our findings and recommended management.
Our eye examinations usually last about 40 minutes but we will advise you if you require any extra specific tests and how long these may take.
We have a general routine we perform for every patient, but as we like to treat every patient as an individual the optician will tailor the examination similarly, which guarantees you a thorough examination executed smoothly, keeping you as relaxed as possible.

The NHS has launched a new free eye care service for people with minor eye conditions.
Instead of waiting for a GP appointment or attending A&E, you can now make an appointment with your local PEARS qualified optician and be seen within one or two working days.
We will assess and treat the condition, or make a referral where appropriate.
The aim of the Northern Ireland Primary Eyecare Assessment and Referral Service (NI PEARS) is to provide appropriate and timely care for patients presenting with an acute, sudden onset, mainly anterior, non sight threatening eye problems in primary care.
Modern contact lenses are easy and safe to wear, and give you good vision - even if you need bifocals or varifocals, or have astigmatism.
Specialist Ortho-K lenses are worn only at night, so if work is dirty or dusty, or if you are keen on rugby or watersports, they're ideal.
Kids find them very easy to use - and they don't get lost!
