They were groundbreaking. With every following collection, it became increasingly easier to reach the consumer. Today, more than 25 years later, theo is sold in 1,400 stores across 50 countries. Originally theo only addressed the avant-garde. Later however, the glasses began to appeal to a wider audience. But theo always had a soft spot for the individualist.

They were first based in a nursery (Kita in German) which inspired the brand name. Their first models were created after they acquired old button manufacturing machines from flea markets and started bending sheets of metal into shape, they nick-named their workshop the "African Machine Park". This process was the basis of their success as each frame is now handmade from sheets of surgical stainless steel that are bent into shape making them incredibly light weight but durable.

The frames are entirely hand made and constructed from a combination of raw titanium and Italian acetate, well constructed, functional, unique in shape, and identifiable all without logos. The fronts are finished by hand with extremely crisp, well-defined edges.

The philosophy behind Philippe Starcks designs is the relationship between man and matter. The specialised hinge mechanism is influenced by the human shoulder joint. This ball and socket joint allows multi-directional movement. This feature makes the frames more durable compared to conventional hinges, as it doesn't weaken when repeatedly placed on and off the head.

After 30 years, they're still independently owned, and the free-thinking Hawaiian spirit that first inspired them is still a part of everything they do. Their home office is located in Lahaina, Maui, and they still design and test all of their sunglasses there. As they would say - "Our sunglasses won't change the world-they'll change the way you see it."

We've all been temporarily blinded by the sun; this is caused by reflected light, known as glare. When light hits a surface, such as the road, water or snow it is reflected back and can strike your eyes making you squint. Tinted lenses block out light but do not offer any glare reduction. Polarised lenses have a specialist filter to eliminate glare for a clear and comfortable image. Most people think that they're at risk only when they're outside on a sunny day, but UV light can go right through clouds, so it doesn't matter if the sky is overcast.

We are a SEIKO lens specialist benefitting from all the latest lens technology available on the market. These lenses provide clear vision correction for 2 or 3 distances and are characterised by a visible line or "segment" on the lens.
