Services
Founded in 1934, Parker & Hammond Opticians actually began its story a decade earlier when Sydney Parker established a pharmacy in South Harrow.
A trained chemist, he qualified as an optician in 1931, incorporating an optical practice into his pharmacy three years later.
Starting as a family practice, the welcoming service and level of care that Sydney sought to provide has prevailed over the years.
Susan Hammond, Sydney's daughter, joined the family business in 1963 after qualifying as an optician, and the renown for optical excellence that is associated with the Parker & Hammond name has grown from there.
Combining innovative technology with our clinical expertise, we provide comprehensive examinations that deliver clear results about the health and condition of your eyes.
Depending on your needs and concerns, we will use the latest advancements in optometric technology where necessary, tailoring our services to the level of care you require.
This means you will never have to pay for something you don't need.
Equipment and treatments are constantly advancing, and we've made it our mission to keep up with the latest developments, to ensure we are always providing our patients with the highest possible level of care.
HEALTH - This relates to the medical condition of your eyes and whether there are any underlying problems.
FOCUS - Checking the accuracy of your focusing, muscle balance and coordination, which is determined by how well the mechanics of your eyes work.
The health and focus of your eyes are not necessarily linked, but our core test delivers insights into the state of each and enables us to determine how to improve their overall working condition.
As with any medical testing, the earlier any issues are detected, the more effective the treatment will be.
Gone are the days of 'one-size-fits-all' spectacle lenses - technology has advanced, and lenses can now be tailored to perfectly fit your needs.
How effective your lenses are depends upon a number of factors, including how your frames fit your face shape and how your ear positioning impacts the angle of inclination.
By using specialist digital technology, we can measure how the frames will sit on you and work out where your main line of focus will be.
This enables us to compensate for any distortion and tailor your lenses to provide optimal vision correction, exactly where you need it.
Located inside and to the back of the eye, the retina can reveal early warning signs of serious conditions including macular degeneration, diabetes, glaucoma, retinal and vitreous detachments and even cancer.
Our Optomap ultra-wide digital retinal imaging system forms part of our enhanced eye examination, and helps us assess the overall health of your eyes.
The test is quick and painless, and doesn't usually require dilation drops being used.
Less advanced methods of imaging - including via direct opthalmoscope, slit lamp and fundus camera view - only reveal around 10-15% of the retina, compared to the 80% achievable with a panoramic Optomap photograph.
