Services
1993: R Doig Optometrist Ltd was established by Robert Doig after 10 years working with Cyril Harper Opticians on Keith Street.
His own business venture was set up on the site of his maternal grandmother's shop, I M Kennedy, 36 Kenneth Street, Stornoway.
At the time of opening, the team started with Robert and 2 optical assistants.
Lewis, Harris and Berneray covered.
2002 : Second testroom added to the Kenneth Street Practice.
A rolling programme of training pre-registration optometrists commenced.
Your optometrist will do various tests and procedures, depending on what your needs and symptoms are.
A sight test will be included.
Sometimes, your optometrist may not be able to do all the tests and procedures during one appointment or may need to repeat a procedure.
If so, they will ask you to come back for a follow-up appointment.
You will not have to pay for this.
Allow plenty of time for the examination.
The eye test should take about 45 minutes and you may need more time for extra procedures or to choose glasses.
As an independent practice R Doig Optometrists is able to offer a wide range of Contact Lenses available from manufacturers at competitive prices.
As a member of the GOC and the College of Optometrists we make sure we always provide our patients with the most appropriate product for their needs.
Contact lenses are a medical device and as you only get one set of eyes it is important to look after your contact lenses correctly and avoid the risks of having any complications associated from contact lens wear.
Good vision is essential in childhood development and regular eye examinations are the key to good vision.
Research has shown that one in five school children have an undetected eye problem.
As 80% of a child's learning occurs visually, many children cannot see well enough to reach their full potential or enjoy everyday childhood activities as much as they could.
A child may not realise if their vision is not clear - they assume the way they see is normal.
Therefore regular eye examinations are advised for all children under the age of 16 at least once a year.
I-Care tonometry: was introduced in 2014 to replace the older, more familiar puff test, which patients often found unpleasant.
This device manufactured in Finland, takes a quick accurate measurement of the intra-ocular pressure of the eye.
Patients often comment on how less intrusive the test is.
This is available in the Stornoway and Balivanich practices and on home visits.
Humphrey 830i Visual Fields: is often referred to as the peripheral vision test.
This particular model is often considered the 'gold standard' visual field machine.
